Article of Interest: Should a Mystery Always Be Predicated on a Murder?

Hi fellow mystery writers and readers.  This is a question close to my heart and I will tell you why- after you read this article.  The link is: Is it Murder Writing a Mystery?  found in Crime Fiction Collective.  Now- this is my dilemma.  In my WIP, the manager doesn’t actually get murdered but he does linger in the hospital. I have since killed him off.  Why because as she says in the article, someone has to die.  But why?  Why can’t someone just survive and the mystery be actually as I tried to do in my novel on the actual theft of the music single on cd?  Still can’t answer that one.  But maybe you guys can?
